Newberry update for Dec., 2011

The Christmas season finds much new, entrepreneurial activity in downtown Newberry.

Antiques on Main opened at 1213 Main and features 12 antique vendors.  They’re off to a good start.  Gentlemen’s Corner, displaced by the Bergen's fire, reopened and restocked at 1101 Caldwell St.   Michelles recently moved to 1401 Main St. and is pleased with her early results.

Many other downtown retailers have new inventory and offerings, such as Books on Main adding coffee and chocolate, plus pottery from local artisan Marguerite Palmer.  Shops in the old hotel are filled for the season with vendors like Newberry artist Nick Davenport.

Overall, downtown seems to be trending up. Creative Solutions, a graphics and marketing company, opened at 1202 Main.  The top-ranked Newberry College wrestling team now calls downtown home, holding practices at the old Market Basket on Harrington St.

I encourage you to “Shop and Dine Newberry County First.”   Whether you’re supporting locally-owned stores and restaurants or local people working at national chains, our economy benefits greatly when we support our Newberry County businesses.

The Newberry Opera House had a good fall season with good sales to locals and tourists.  Generating much national attention was the Newt Gingrich town hall meeting at the Opera House on Nov. 29.  National media covering Gingrich in Newberry included CBS, CNN, the Wall Street Journal, and the Washington Post.  I “Googled” the event on the internet and found over 4,000 articles about Gingrich in Newberry.  After appearing at the Opera House, Gingrich ate dinner at Steven W’s and met with some national reporters there.

The Firehouse Conference Center has seen increased bookings this fall as it becomes better known throughout the state.   Many groups have come away very pleased after holding meetings and events there.

The Newberry Christmas Parade, sponsored by the Newberry Jaycees, was thought by many to be the best Newberry Christmas parade in recent memory with entries plentiful, joyful and well decorated.  The city thanks the Jaycees and the participants for their efforts.

In November, the American Legion sponsored a very successful Veterans Day Parade downtown.  Eleven World War II veterans served as grand marshals.  It was a patriotic day, full of appreciation for all veterans for what they’ve done for our country.

Pricing news from the Clinton-Newberry Natural Gas Authority, which is owned by the cities of Clinton and Newberry, is good.  With large, new discoveries of natural gas in the US and new drilling technology, natural gas prices have dropped a great deal in the last couple of years.  For example, in 2006 CNNGA charged $1.76/therm.  Currently, CNNGA is charging $0.95/therm, a 46% decrease.  That decrease will help gas bills this winter.  Nationally, natural gas is projected to become a more important part of American's energy needs.

CNNGA will have a $3 per month increase for residential customers for capacity charge, which means reserving transportation capacity in the interstate pipelines. Currently, most natural gas used by CNNGA and other Southern users comes from the Gulf of Mexico. With new discoveries in the Northeast, new gas lines will be built from Pennsylvania and surrounding states to the South.  CNNGA’s share of the new pipelines works out to $3/month per household, taking the capacity charge from $7/month per household to $10/month.  If you’re like me and only have natural gas for heat, you’ll see that $10 capacity charge as your minimum bill this summer.  The new gas discoveries and pipelines are projected to keep natural gas prices mostly stable and reasonable for the next decade.

Thank you for your time.  On behalf of the City of Newberry, I wish you a Merry Christmas and hope you have a most enjoyable holiday season.
